After the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, the beginning of school shootings, I was already into my seventh year as a law enforcement and military tactics instructor, and had to include responding to active shooter incidents when teaching other professionals. Plus, as a Special Operations operator throughout my career I had to be ready myself.
Not only have I’ve taught professionals for the past two decades in engaging active shooters (patrol officers and S.W.A.T. teams), but I’ve also taught school administrators, teachers, and even children of all ages how to survive the same.
Of course, school shootings are not the only mass casualty incidents any of your students may face, but recent history has proven that virtually no place is safe: office shootings, theater shootings, mall shootings, church shootings, and even at a concert like what took place in Las Vegas in 2017. As such, practically everybody is worried about being the victim of an active shooter: parents, children, anyone who works in an office, hair salon, fast food restaurant, et cetera. You, the self-defense instructor, can teach your students how to survive active shooter incidents. If I’ve trained the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Army, Blizzard Entertainment, and many more, for the same, then I certainly can do it for you also: effective techniques, tactics, and training methods.
