The new face of Reality-Based
by Jim Wagner
Yesterday, February 26 ,2016 was a beautiful day on the live-fire gun range in Southern California. Not a cloud in the sky, a gentle breeze, and twelve enthusiastic civilian students who wanted the best tactical training that money could buy.
Yesterday was the new face of the Reality-Based Personal Protection system – more women coming to the system, and younger people. In fact, the newer generation did not grow up on karate, kung-fu, and other traditional martial arts like my generation did, and so to learn how to survive today’s crime and terrorism they’re coming to a system that will teach them how to survive a gang swarm, criminal chemical attack, a sniper attack, what to do if a grenade is lobbed at their feet, prison style knife attacks, and yes, even how to handle firearms effectively; not just plinking at a static target, but how to move and shoot like a combat soldier would. The system gives them that, and has been since January 21, 2003.

The good news is the demand for these gun courses are increasing, and I enjoy teaching them. The first day is all classroom where they learn how to handle a weapon safely, firearms nomenclature, range rules, the standard shooting positions (in police-speak it is known as Monthly Qualification), and they even had the opportunity to fire airsoft pistols (training guns that fire a non-lethal 6mm plastic projectile). The second day, yesterday, was out on the range for six and a half hours going over everything they learned in class, but more. My one student, Valerie (shown in the photo) had never picked up a real handgun in her life, and yet with the instructions I gave her she was shooting tight groups in the bull’s eye at 10 meters. Yes, she needed work on her moving and shooting, but she was really starting to get the hang of it by the end of the day. For the rest who had some experience shooting they all improved considerably, and at the end of the day every single student told me that they wanted more training from me.
Next month I am schedule for a new class of shooters, and in an increasingly violent world I am helping people gain self-confidence, and giving them skills that might possibly save their lives one day.
BE A HARD TARGET
