The most famous plastic surgeon in the world goes Reality-Based
Jim Wagner
Dr. Rey is best known in the United States for his reality show Dr. 90210 produced by E! from 2004 to 2008. Today this Harvard University graduate has a couple of his own television shows in South America and still runs his successful practice in Beverly Hills. For his exceptional skills as a surgeon Dr. Rey has appeared in dozens of magazines all over the world. What most people don’t know about Dr. Rey is that he is a martial artist holding a 2 nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and another one in Hapkido. Yet, after years of studying traditional-based martial arts and spending a lot of time on the competition floor Dr. Rey decided it was time to go reality-based. Dr. Rey decided he wanted to study under my direction beginning in May of 2011.
Dr. Rey does not just cater to the rich and famous, but he is a true humanitarian. He has devoted hundreds of hours doing needed surgery on Third World children for free. When he first started this effort Dr. Rey gave specific instructions to the organizers, “Put me in the worse places in the world,” and they did. Dr. Rey saw first hand the violence in a few countries, and has even been shot at. Through these experiences he realized that his martial arts training did not prepare him for most violent crimes and acts of terrorism. Dr. Rey, who has been featured in Black Belt magazine in the United States, had seen me in this same magazine many times in the past, and was an avid reader of my monthly column High Risk. He looked me up by typing my name into Google and contacted me. Fortunately, I am only a one-hour drive from his home in Beverly Hills.
I first met with Dr. Rey to give him his first lesson in May of 2011. The first thing he wanted to get started with was Knife Survival. He has his own private dojo in his house and I started teaching him like I would any student. If you are one of my students it does not matter if you are a Special Forces operator, a housewife, or a celebrity, you get the training that will save your life. Within minutes Dr. Rey was amazed at how he was unable to defend himself against a “real” knife attack that I launched on him, but by the end of his first lesson he was surviving most of the attacks. He realized what every student soon comes to understand:
1. The average knife fight is over within 5 seconds.
2. You will get cut or stabbed in a real knife fight.
3. Distance is your friend.
4. A knife fight is survivable if you know what you are doing, and jettison a lot of the myths perpetuated by many martial arts systems.
Oh, and needless to say, Dr. Rey’s favorite knife is the Wagner Urban manufactured by the famous German knife company Boker. He likes to buy these knives in bulk and pass them out to his associates. He said to me, “It is just fantastically designed.”

More recently, on December 28, 2012, I had a private lesson with Dr. Rey. We covered knife attacks along with material from my Defensive Tactics course. However, what made this particular day different was that Dr. Rey agreed to an interview for my new YouTube show called Be A Hard Target that I will launch this new year. So far I have interviews with Tony Blauer of the SPEAR system, Hank Hayes the inventor of the NO LIE BLADE, and publisher Dana Stamos. Dr. Rey told me that he would be honored to appear on my new series. He said to me, “I want people to know about my connection with you and Reality-Based. I want them to know that I take my training seriously.”
The Be A Hard Target series, about 30 minutes a program, will start with an interview, show a technique or two, and feature a martial arts product. This is not going to replace anything I have up now, but it will be an addition. I decided a year ago that I come across some of the world’s most famous martial artists, and so why not get interviews from them when I have the opportunity and get some insights into their thinking?
Although Dr. Rey is one of the most famous doctors on the planet, I find him very humble and down to earth. When we are not training, and taking a break or cooling down, we find it easy to talk with each other about religion, politics, and business.
I look forward to training Dr. Rey in 2013. We still have a lot of material to cover, and finding the time to get it all in between our two busy schedules is a real art.

As of today I have 76 videos up on my YouTube channel titled jimwagnerrbpp 333,660 views, and 1,027 subscribers. Subscribers are notified immediately whenever I have a new video up on my channel.
I am a latecomer when it comes to social media. I joined YouTube on January 20, 2011 and Facebook (now with almost 5,000 friends) and Twitter (with over 1,000 personal protection Tweets) not long after. I wished I had joined sooner, for I had students and instructors begging me to get the word out about my system, but I didn’t listen for years. I just thought it would take up more of my time with very little return. However, “better late than never.” Social media has been great in connecting with like-minded people, like you, who want Reality-Based Personal Protection knowledge, techniques, and training methods.

The new 2013 schedule is up on this website
Jim Wagner
Putting my yearly schedule together is always a challenge. I must first give priority to my military schedule, for I am required to serve as a staff sergeant one weekend out of each month. I’m a staunch patriot and believe in serving my country. After that I start with slots set aside for my main school in Solingen, Germany, and then work it out with my directors in France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Luxemburg. Then there are private seminars, which never show up on my schedule, and other projects on the books.
As of this last day of 2012 I do not have every date up for 2013, but the bulk of them are up and perhaps you will be able to attend one or a few. The schedule will be finalized by the end of January, which should include a few courses in the USA as well.
Be A Hard Target.
