Instructor certification courses
The Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system is a revolutionary way to teach self-defense. So much so that many people are copying things that Jim Wagner introduced years ago in his books, articles, and DVDs, such as training with stage blood, air guns, self triage and self first aid, the use-of-force continuum, and the list goes on. Likewise, the way we train Reality-Based instructors is revolutionary as well. We do it much the same way that police and military organizations certify instructors.
In this unique system an instructor is not a “master” in the traditional martial arts sense of the word (someone who has mastered a set of techniques and subculture requirements). Our definition of an instructor is someone who has been taught simple and effective life saving techniques and training methods, and who can accurately pass then on to others simply by following the Reality-Based Personal Protection course outlines.
Since most martial arts systems do not teach their students the full spectrum of modern conflict (dealing with today’s armed criminals, mentally ill persons, terrorists, etc.), nor do they teach pre-conflict or post-conflict material, having a martial arts background is not a requirement to become a Reality-Based Personal Protection instructor. Likewise, having a police, corrections, security, or military background is not a requirement either since even within these professions certain individuals may not have received adequate training in defensive tactics, tactics, and firearms to qualify them as an “expert” in self-defense. Obviously, any past related training is beneficial for those coming into our system, but such training may or may not make someone a better Reality-Based instructor.
When Jim Wagner teaches people how to be Reality-Based Personal Protection instructors he starts everyone out at the same level, regardless of their background or abilities. As the course progresses individuals who have extensive fighting backgrounds are taught to achieve higher levels, while beginners are give a solid foundation in personal protection. With this unique method of teaching even people with no or little fighting background many times prove to be just as competent at Reality-Based techniques and conflict drills as those who have had years of martial arts, police, military or other professional backgrounds. This is proven in most of our courses time and again.
Instructor certification is not automatic. As long as the participant can learn, and successfully demonstrate all course techniques, an instructor certification is then awarded, but only after all five Level 1 courses are completed, and likewise for Levels 1 and 3. Since this system is modular, courses can be taken individually over time, or all at once. For those people taking instructor courses individually over time a student certificate will be issued for completing the courses. Then, upon completion of the fifth and final course, an instructor certificate is awarded.
When an individual is awarded the hard earned instructor certificate he or she may officially teach the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system commercially (profit or non-profit), and will receive the following:
1. Personal protection training and instructor training directly from Jim Wagner
2. A detailed course outline (hard copy and a copy on a disk)
3. Free listing on the official Jim Wagner Reality-Based website – forever
4. The right to observe any Level 1 course (to take notes), whether in full or in part, for free, or to assist Jim Wagner
5. A 10% discount on all Reality-Based Products from the world headquarters (USA)
6. The right to enroll into Level 2 and Level 3 Reality-Based Personal Protection courses. Those with student training certificates are not allowed into Level 3 courses
The instructor does not give any percentage of his or her income to Jim Wagner or the world headquarters or the director for teaching Jim Wagner courses. There are no hidden costs – no outrageous instructor fees and no website listing fees.
The instructor can teach wherever he or she likes. There are no exclusive territory rights. We believe that only good instructors and good schools will succeed.
The instructor can teach only students, and is not authorized to certify any instructors; only Jim Wagner can certify instructors in order that all instructors worldwide are "first generation instructors," and so that the system will not be watered down like so many other martial arts systems.
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION
For certified instructors only, you can join the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection International Association today for only the price of one instructor course ($250.00 USD), and receive updates on the system for one year.
No on joining the Association
Instructors do NOT have to join the International Association. However, consider the following. On the bottom of every Reality-Based instructor certificate, under Jim Wagner’s signature, there is an expiration date. Just prior to the date of expiration it is recommended that the instructor join the International Association. If the instructor does not want to join the association after the expiration date he or she may continue to officially teach Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection courses for which they are authorized on their certificates to teach, but upon the third year of the certificate’s expiration date the instructor will no longer have authorization to teach if he or she were never a part of the association. If after three years an instructor wants his or her instructor certification renewed, they must pay for the previous two years association fees (a total of $250 + $250 + $50 late fee for second year + $50 late fee for third year = $600). Once paid the clock starts over and the instructor has three years to teach. If the instructor fails to be in the association and upon the third year the instructor's certficate expires the instructor must physically take the Level 1 Reality-Based Personal Protection courses again for 75% price from Jim Wagner. If the instructor fails to take all five Level 1 courses within 6 months of the expiration date the instructor certificate will no longer be valid and the instructor will no longer be authorized to teach the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system commercially.
Even if an instructor lets their instructor certificate expire, their name will still remain on the official Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection website as an honored instructor.
Instructors who tend not to join the association are those who want an instructor certificate to build their résumé only, those who plan on teaching in a very limited capacity (such as private lessons or small groups), or those who do not feel it is necessary to receive updated material from Jim Wagner.
Yes on joining the Association
Once a Level 1 certificate expires, exactly one year later from the date of issuance, an instructor may join the International Association. The benefit of joining this organization is to receive the latest updates (changes in the system, new teaching methods, and advertising and marketing materials) as they come out. The cost is only $250.00 (USD) a year; the price of one instructor course.
The updates will be sent to the instructor by email or by post if the instructor does not have internet access. All the instructor has to do is read or view the update, fill in a simple electronic form, and email it back to the International Association, which lets us know that the instructor has seen the update and has agreed to comply with it. Since we are in regular contact with the instructor, the instructor does not have to physically train with us yearly in order to receive a yearly recertification. Each year a new certificate, with a new expiration date affixed upon it, will be sent to the instructor.
On the expiration date of the fourth year the instructor must physically take the Level 1 Reality-Based Personal Protection courses again as an observer, for free, from Jim Wagner. If the instructor fails to take all five Level 1 courses within 6 months of the expiration date the instructor certificate will no longer be valid and the instructor will no longer be authorized to teach the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system commercially.
Those who tend to join the association are those who teach commercially or privately for their agencies or organizations, and for those who want to be updated on the latest changes in the Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system.
